High Dynamic Range - Panorama Architecture Photography

Brown Palace hotel lobby - atrium, Denver, Colorado

Brown Palace Central Atrium Lobby

Here's a challenging situation. Photograph a very tall and narrow central atrium lobby to show the spaciousness of the area and its unique architecture. It is a very tall space for  any lens to cover in one image. And it certainly is so large a space as to make lighting with significant additional artificial lighting out of the question, unless the client has a Hollywood type budget. The solution can be found in high dynamic range photography combined with the stitching together of several views to create a vertical panorama.

The image above of the interior lobby of this hotel was created from 6 separate images using a wide angle lens and photographing sequentially from the bottom up. So imagine 6 images taken starting at the bottom and panning upward. These images were then stitched together to make the complete vertical panorama.

High dynamic range was captured by doing multiple differing exposures of each of the 6 views. These exposures were combined to create an image that captures all of the range of light in the scene -- from the darkest shadows to the highlights (excluding light bulbs).

The resulting image demonstrates the multiple skills and techniques that I can bring to difficult and challenging photography projects to ensure your property is well presented.

Experiential Photography for Hotels and Resorts

Couple in Adirondack Chairs by lake in Eastern Sierras - Hotel-Resort Photography

Relaxing by a mountain lake

Mostly what I do is architecturally oriented images of hotels and resorts. Images of the lobby, guest rooms, exteriors, restaurants, etc. These can be either with people or without, but mostly without people. But in addition to these architecture oriented pictures some hotel and resorts like to show people enjoying their facilities and the recreational activities of the surrounding areas. I am always pleased when I have the opportunity to photograph something a little different from the architectural images -- to show people engaged in activities and enjoying the facilities that the resort has to offer their clientele.
Some people call these 'experiential' shots.

Recently I went out the the eastern Sierras in Mammoth Lakes, California and photographed just such images for a resort. Although primarily known as a ski resort, this is a beautiful area with lots of outdoor activities all year round. The resort wanted to sell the idea that there were year-round activities and not just winter skiing. So, into the great outdoors we went. As you can see from the images here, we emphasized a number of popular outdoor activities. We did fly fishing shots, hiking, mountain biking, relaxing by lakes, kids playing, massages, and more. I spent considerable time scouting out locations and determining the best times to photograph to create really impressive images showing off the the beauty of the area and the range of activities to enjoy in summer. Images were always composed with room for copy and graphic elements in the layouts of the final marketing materials.

There were some very early mornings and late afternoons when the light was just right. All this involved a certain amount of hiking and backpacking of camera gear but I didn't mind as I find it a pleasure to be outdoors, especially when the weather was as fine as what we got for the week I was there.

These experiential images do not show up in my architecture and hotel photography portfolio too much but I am eminently capable of capturing them for my hotel and resort clients, and enjoy the opportunity to do so.

Food Photography

The resort has an very nice restaurant with an outstanding chef. They wanted to have some food photography to use in marketing this aspect of their resort. I was  happy to oblige the request.

I called upon my experience from years ago when I did food photography for Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, and restaurants. In recent years as a hotel and resort photographer I have continued to contribute to my food photography expertise with the occasional opportunity to create food shots at fine hotel-resort restaurants like the one here.

At the restaurant we set up in a corner and did eight food shots in 4 hours. This is a few more shots than I think should be photographed in four hours. I would have liked to have had additional time to style and prop the images some more, but we turned out some enticing images and everyone was very satisfied.
